Key highlights of Yamaha’s exhibition in the Japan Mobility Show 2023 include:

MOTOROiD2: Your Indispensable Companion

This experimental model melds mobility with intelligent technologies in order to study that question. As a further evolution of the original MOTOROiD, MOTOROiD2 is a vehicle for personal mobility that can recognize its owner, get up off its kickstand, and move alongside its rider, but also has a distinctly lifelike feel when somebody is riding on its back and has a presence more like a lifetime companion. The Active Mass Center Control System (AMCES) for attitude sensing and self-balancing as well as the image recognition AI system for recognizing and reacting to the owner’s face and gestures have both been further refined.

Additionally, MOTOROiD2 features a new Leaf structure unlike any motorcycle before, giving the model a chassis specialized for lifelike and complementary reactions to the rider.

TRICERA: Turning Self-Improvement into a recreation

This three-wheel open-top electric autocycle pursues the unfiltered joy derived from operating a highly responsive vehicle. Its development concept is “Exciting Urban Mobility: When one’s body and mind and the machine become an organic whole.” This vehicle for personal mobility not only delivers the unparalleled feeling of freedom of an open-top car but also a new Kando*-filled driving experience with its three-wheel steering.

The TRICERA’s human-centric packaging was derived from the level of controllability felt when changing the center point of the vehicle’s turning circle via the in-phase and counter-phase of the rear wheel. Additionally, enabling the user to select a manual mode for rear-wheel steering allows for the sense of accomplishment that comes when acquiring and developing new driving skills. Modern mobility is shifting toward automated driving, but that is precisely why Yamaha Motor is going back to basics and exploring the *Kando that is created when a person is at the controls.

*A Japanese word for the simultaneous feelings of deep satisfaction and intense excitement that we experience when we encounter something of exceptional value.

Charlie

Yamaha Corporation’s AI robot “Charlie” talks with you in songs. AI robot “Charlie” will tell you about a motorcycle and two Yamaha companies using ChatGPT developed by OpenAI and “the song generating AI” developed by Yamaha Corporation.

Yamaha Motor is in charge of the conversation AI, which combines ChatGPT and AI technology to achieve learning of Yamaha history and Charlie’s character tuning. The song generating AI developed by Yamaha Corporation is being used to generate songs. Charlie’s concept is “monotonous life is too boring.” It comforts you with dramatic singing of fun songs in good times and ballads in sad times, finding the perfect song for every mood.

Charlie is no longer in production.

Real Sound Viewing: Reality beyond space and time

“Real sound viewing” technology developed by Yamaha Corporation offers a live experience for everyone regardless of the time or place by recreating live performances that could not be attended due to various reasons, such as unavailable tickets, faraway venue, and separated music bands. The technology involves the digitization of performances and converts related data into live sounds of instruments. Thus, live performances are faithfully recreated.

“Though there are people wanting to experience more live performances, such opportunities are not available. I want to retain the true atmosphere of live performances.” With this thought in mind, Mr. Yoshiyuki Tsuge, the developer, envisioned and achieved “vacuum packing” of live performances.
ELOVE

The technologies acquired through the R&D that produced MOTOBOT—an autonomous motorcycle-riding humanoid robot unveiled in 2015—and MOTOROiD became the foundation for developing the Advanced Motorcycle Stabilization Assist System (AMSAS), which frees users from the worry and fatigue that accompanies riding at very slow, walking speeds in particular and helps make motorcycling safer and more enjoyable.

The ELOVE was created with “Game changing!” as its concept and is an electric scooter equipped with AMSAS. The standard model pictured will be on display alongside a version with styling co-conceived by a high school student from a remote island in Okinawa, who commutes to campus via a 50cc scooter, and a professional wheelchair tennis player.

Trial Yamaha Electric Version 2.2: TY-E 2.2

The development of Yamaha’s first electric trial bike “TY-E” launched in 2018 was the beginning of their unique approaches toward achieving carbon neutrality. The latest model, “TY-E 2.2,” is lighter and stronger. It is a model with optimized stiffness and heat management and equipped with new components such as the motor controller unit (MCU).

“FUN × EV” was proposed as a developmental concept bike , with the goal of achieving “enjoyment beyond internal combustion engine” by utilizing the powerful low-speed torque and acceleration performance of EVs.

Rock me on

From the exhibition “You Are Here” at Milan Design Week 2023, which is the largest design event in the world, Yamaha presents a wooden rocking horse as a symbol of My First Yamaha.

The rocking horse doubles up as both a child’s first vehicle and musical instrument.

MT-125, YZF-R125, XSR125

The motorcycle series with 125 cc engines offers an easy-to-ride size and easy-to-handle emission with the anticipation of great enjoyment.

In addition to being lightweight and compact in size, the motorcycles are economical with low maintenance cost and high fuel efficiency.

ACTIVE FIELD CONTROL [AFC]

An immersive audio solution developed by Yamaha Corporation, can freely control audio objects within a sound field and create an ideal sound environment.

AFC has two functions: “AFC Enhance,” which is a sound field support system that optimizes the reverberation of a space, and “AFC Image,” which is an audiovisual control system that freely controls the localization of a sound. For the show, Yamaha uses AFC for the entire booth to create an immersive audio space where you can comfortably experience the reality of motorcycle performance, the performance of musical instruments, and music on the stage.

TMW

Conceived by volunteer project members from the Motorcycle Testing Division, the TMW is Yamaha Motor’s first off-road adventure Leaning Multi-Wheeler (LMW). The front two wheels move independently and feature excellent adaptability for various surface conditions, and the LMW linkage enables the mounting of a large front carrier rack that stays level with the ground even when in a lean or on an incline.

This ample luggage capacity further entices users to venture out for a ride. The TMW is also a hybrid; electric hub motors drive the two front wheels, while the rear wheel is driven by the engine.

HARMO: Next-generation control system

HARMO is a “innovative electric boat propulsion system platform” that was developed with the goal of providing smart package boats that offer more comfort to passengers with the quietness unique to electric motors. It consists of a propulsion unit powered by an electric motor, a remote-control box that controls movement, and a joystick that enables intuitive operation.

The motor drive adopts the rim drive method* to achieve high-efficiency electric propulsion. In particular, it offers strong thrust at low speeds, enabling intuitive operation and notably lower vibration and noise, resulting in comfortable rides.

E-FV

This electric minibike for family recreation was developed by a volunteer team of young engineers as a fun side project aimed at exploring the kind of enjoyment possible with electric mobility.

Mounting the same power unit as the TY-E electric trials bike, it requires no gear shifting and is a vehicle for purely focusing on and enjoying riding. In addition to its quiet operation unique to EVs, it mounts Yamaha Corporation’s Active Sound Control technology, allowing the rider to enjoy exhaust notes and the like from conventional gasoline-powered vehicles when starting it up or turning it off.

MOBILE ROBOT ARM

This mobile collaborative robot pairs a robotic arm for performing tasks in place of humans with an autonomous cart.

The 7-axis robotic arm has the same range of motion as a human arm and the cobot itself can work in the same spaces as people while avoiding obstacles.

Y-00Z MTB, Y-01W AWD
