We worked on a bucket list with Independent Singer-Songwriter Denice Lao to shoot our very first music video. We chose one of her most personal songs – “First to Last” which is a tribute to her first love and a song about regaining trust. Unknown to all of us was a surprise proposal in the works by her partner, Kim who pulled us to the side mid-day and showed us the ring.
Listening to First to Last shows the tough road this couple had gone through, which leaves a bittersweet feeling upon listening to the tune, and to see it unfold to a literal promise of forever on shoot day was heartwarming.
Upon finding out Kim’s plan to propose, the DiscoverMNL team quickly came up with an impromptu scene to stage the big moment without the singer-songwriter knowing. We had her put her hair up, to which she joked behind the scenes “Hindi ba parang ikakasal na ko?” We laughed along to remain unnoticed and Denice, being focused on her craft did not have a clue and followed along.
We told her to close her eyes, focus on the camera and look down once the ending line drops – “So let’s begin, to love again.” and the rest turned into a real-life music video on how Denice has found her lifetime from her first love.
