Things to Check When Buying Rice

Rice has always been a staple in Filipino households.  That’s why selecting a rice variant and a rice brand are both important especially when committing to a sack purchase that will last for several weeks. Here are some things to check:

IMPORTED VERSUS LOCAL

These days, supermarkets are filled with both imported and local rice options. However, preferring local brands means you can research how the rice is cultivated and processed. In a December 2020 article (https://www.philrice.gov.ph/philippine-rice-is-safe-of-good-quality-says-da-philrice-expert/) published by the Department of Agriculture – Philippine Rice Research Institute, Chief Science Research Specialist Marissa V. Romero shared a comparative study that Filipino farmers generally use less pesticide, which means lower concentration of heavy metals present like lead.

Another advantage of going local is freshness. Romero added, “Consumers can be assured that locally-produced rice is safe because it is not being shipped and stored for a long time. There is no need to fumigate them with chemicals.”

Lastly, going local means supporting the livelihood of countless Filipino farmers. It’s a way of giving back to the community for their hard work and dedication.

RICE QUALITY

Buying from a rice dealer gives you the freedom to inspect the rice grains before purchasing. Check the following:

  • The color of the rice should be bright and consistent.
  • Press and feel the rice. If it’s broken easily, chances are it’s not from fresh batch anymore.
  • It should be free from impurities like lice, dirt, or small rocks.
  • Fresh rice should not have a moldy or stale smell.
  • Cheaper price doesn’t always equate to quality rice. Choose a rice variant that is within your budget without sacrificing the freshness and taste.

WHERE TO FIND QUALITY RICE

The Philippines’ major producers of rice are from Central Luzon, Western Visayas, Cagayan Valley, Ilocos Region, Soccsksargen & Bicol Region. Nueva Ecija is recognized as the “Rice Granary of the Philippines”, where quality brands like Homegrown Grains is from.

Presently, Homegrown Grains has 6 rice variants to choose from:

  • Premium Rice
  • Dinurado Rice
  • Bulilit Special Rice
  • Special Long Grain Rice
  • Fiesta Aromatic Rice
  • Sinandomeng Well Milled Rice

While they may have different characteristics and price points, one thing is definitely sure: they are cultivated, harvested, and milled properly to provide your family the rice quality that you deserve.
