MEXICAN CAFÉ DE OLLA

Tracing its roots from Mexico, Café De Olla (or café olla) was created by soldaderas or adelitas who supported soldiers through food during the Mexican Revolution of 1910. You can say that this strong yet flavorful coffee kept the soldiers, well, strong and brave.

Café de Olla originally has warm spices like cloves and cinnamon as well as richness from chocolate and it’s traditionally cooked in a clay pot. Today, you can recreate this piece of Mexican culinary history using NESCAFÉ GOLD and a few simple ingredients.

ITALIAN CAPPUCCINO

Named after the Capuchin friars of Italy, this cup of joe has been synonymous to Italy for ages. They say the color of the drink is similar to the friars’ robes.

Nowadays, almost every coffee shop in the world offers this espresso-milk concoction that will give you the perk up you need any time of the day. Now you can make café-style cappuccino at home with NESCAFÉ GOLD and some pantry staples.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 tsp NESCAFÉ GOLD
  • 1 tsp White Sugar
  • 30-40 ml Hot water
  • 120 ml milk
  • Chocolate powder (optional)

EQUIPMENT

  • Teaspoon
  • Weighing scale
  • Blender
  • Milk Pitcher
  • Coffee Cup
  • Microwaveable Cup

PROCEDURE

  1. Prepare 1 teaspoon of NESCAFÉ GOLD and 1 teaspoon of white sugar in a coffee cup. This 1:1 ratio is a good starting point. You can adjust the flavors later on according to your own liking.
  2. Pour 30-40ml of hot water in the cup. The amount of water you’ll use will determine how thick and how strong your cappuccino will be – just like the espressos in coffee shops.
  3. Mix well until smooth. Set aside.
  4. Put 120 ml of milk into a microwaveable container and heat for 30-40 seconds.
  5. Pour heated milk into a blender and blend until its volume increases by about half. The blender will aerate the milk and make it frothy.
  6. Pour your frothy milk into a milk pitcher (or any container with a spout). Swirl the milk to evenly distribute foam.
  7. When ready, pour the frothy milk into your coffee cup. Start with a thin pour, only slightly tilting the milk pitcher but maintaining a constant stream. As your coffee reaches an inch above the top of the cup, thicken your pour by tilting your milk pitcher some more.
  8. Sprinkle some chocolate powder on top to achieve the perfect coffee shop look.

NORWAY’S COFFEE TONIC

Created by a resourceful Norwegian barista, this thick and strong brew also known as “espresso tonic” is usually prepared outdoors. The barista didn’t want to waste leftover espresso and tonic water from a party, so they mixed it with some simple syrup and the rest is history. Today, espresso tonic is a huge hit in Norway.

For us in the Philippines, this refreshing drink would be perfect any time of the day. It takes a little bit of effort to make the simple syrup (which also highlights the flavors of NESCAFÉ GOLD), but trust us when we say it’s worth the extra effort.

VIENNESE COFFEE

Einspanner is a creamy, espresso-based drink that originated in Vienna, Austria. It got its name from single horse-drawn carriages that were operated by coachmen who liked to put heavy cream on top of their coffee to keep it warm and also avoid spilling it during travels.

For a modern twist, we’re adapting this Austrian treat to our tropical climate by using NESCAFÉ GOLD and adding some ice and chocolate powder. It’s perfect for merienda during warm afternoons at home. You can enjoy this drink two ways: Mix the cream and coffee evenly, or take a sip of coffee and use a spoon to enjoy the richness of pure cream.

HONG KONG’S YUAN YANG

This coffee-tea combo came from the street vendors of Hong Kong. The name “yuan yang” refers to Mandarin ducks, which usually represents the “opposites attract” kind of love. It’s fitting because the bold flavors of coffee work so well with the sublime notes of tea. It’s made even better with the addition of milk and sugar.

This popular drink is perfect for those who love both coffee and tea. If you haven’t tried it yet in Hong Kong, it’s an adventure for your taste buds that you can now enjoy at home with NESCAFÉ GOLD.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 tsp NESCAFÉ GOLD
  • Black Tea
  • 3 tsps White Sugar
  • 50 ml Milk
  • 150ml + 100 ml Hot Water
  • Evaporated Milk (optional)

EQUIPMENT

  • Teaspoons
  • Microwaveable Cups
  • Weighing Scale / Measuring Cup
  • Timer

PROCEDURE

  1. In a cup, steep black tea for 3-5 minutes in 150ml hot water. You may use as many teabags of black tea as you prefer and you can steep it for as long as you want depending on your preferred strength of flavor. Set aside.
  2. In another cup, dissolve 1 teaspoon of NESCAFÉ GOLD and 3 teaspoons of white sugar in 100ml hot water. Mix until smooth then set aside.
  3. In another cup, heat 50 ml of milk in the microwave for 20-30secs. Just remember that more milk will make your drink thicker, so adjust it according to your preference.
  4. Once the black tea is ready, combine it with the coffee and sugar and add as much milk as you want.

Pro-Tip: Yuang Yang is also great when served cold, which is perfect for our climate! Just skip heating the milk, so it will cool down the coffee and tea when combined. You can also try cold-brewing your black tea by steeping it overnight in the fridge and using it the next day. Serve with some ice and enjoy!
