A Travel Guide to Palawan

PALAWAN is one of, if not the most, sought after destinations in Philippines. With its beautiful white sand beaches, crystal blue waters, and being home to one of the 7 wonders of the world (Underground River), people gather their travel funds just to go to this tourist spot.

Having visited recently, We learned that Palawan has low to zero crime rates. What makes it safer is that it’s rarely affected by typhoons and earthquakes due to its geographical location. Living on a beautiful beach, safe from calamities and the chaos of the city, sounds like a good idea right?

image1But if you’re not up for that yet, here’s a rundown of the places we went to, the things we did and our experiences from each of them, to inspire you to at least visit this place in the near future if you haven’t already, or to give you new ideas on your next trip there.

How to get there:

  • Flight from Manila to Puerto Princesa (Php3,300-Php4,500 depending on the date and if they have promos)
  • Tricycle ride or car service from Puerto Princesa to your chosen accommodation
  • Boat ride if you’re staying at other islands
  • Tricycles are the most common and convenient way to get around the island (P60-P100)

Accommodations:

We stayed at the Deep Forest Inn which is 10 minutes away from the airport. It was very comfortable and the staff was very accommodating (cheers for good customer service!).

However, we would have personally chosen another accommodation located by the beach. There are widely known accommodations such as Blue Palawan, Dos Palmas, etc., which are in fact located by the beach, which is a MUST for travellers who want that summer getaway feel.

So far, we can recommend Deep Forest Inn for those who want a comfortable place to stay and who doesn’t staying by the pool side on lazy days instead of a beach front.

Pros:

  • 15 minutes away from the Airport
  • Accessible to the different well-known spots around the island
  • Comfortable and Quiet
  • Friendly and hospitable Staff
  • Pool bar, wine cellar, and dining amenities
  • Partnered with package tours
  • Good food and has many options
  • Tricycles are available at the entrance of the resort

Cons:

  • Not by the beach
  • Food prices range from moderate to expensive
  • Fixed rates for tricycles

Things to do in Palawan:

  • Take a City Tour that takes you to Mitra’s Ranch, Crocodile Farm, Baker’s Hill, Butterfly Garden and the Binuatan Weaving Village

Palawan

There was an air-conditioned van which took us around each city spot and there was a very funny tour guide with us which made the trip very informative and entertaining. Our favorite was the Butterfly Garden because the garden was just beautiful, plus you can hold a butterfly, and what really stood out for me was meeting the indigenous people of Palawan in the Tribal Village. They showed us their hand-made musical instruments and tools for hunting and even their pet snake, eek! It was a great experience meeting them and getting a chance to know more about their culture.

  • Go island hopping and explore Honday Bay, Cowrie Island, Luli Island, Pandan Island, and Starfish Island

Our package tour that took us to Honda Bay, Cowrie Island, and Pandan Island. There are various activities like snorkeling, fish feeding, swimming. Another highlight is trying the famous tamilok (wood worm) delicacy in Palawan, which we did, and it actually tasted good despite the slimy part, but if you have an adventurous palate maybe this won’t be a problem. It was a good experience overall, and at least we can say we tried it.

  • Visit one of the 7 wonders of the world. The Puerto Princesa Underground River is really something you shouldn’t miss when you visit Palawan. Its beautiful shades of blue water and its natural formations inside the cave will really leave you in awe

  • Go Zip lining, hiking, and explore a cave at Ugong Rock Adventures. You can arrange these activities when you book a package with the Underground River Tour.
  • Go on a food trip around the most famous restaurants in Puerto Princesa

It was a good idea that we took the City Tour first because we were able to get tips on what the good restaurants were, thanks to our tour guide.

Where to Eat in Palawan:

  • Kinabuch serves the famous crocodile sisig, tamilok, and other Filipino favorites. (P100-P400/meal)
  • Badjao Seafood Restaurant overlooks the beach and you pass through this long bridge surrounded by a mangrove forest. Their food consists of Filipino favorites. This restaurant is more known for its view. (P100-P300/meal)
  • Deep Forest Inn Restaurant has a good mix of Filipino and foreign favorites. (P200-P500/meal)
  • Other recommendations we received were KaLui, Ka Inato, Bona’s Chaolong, and there’s even a vegetarian restaurant called Namaskar Vegetarian.

Palawan was indeed one of the best destinations in the Philippines. There’s more than meets the eye in our country, so to more travels and adventures for all of us! Cheers!

Undeniably believe that which you said. Your favorite justification appeared to be on the net the simplest thing to be aware of. I say to you, I definitely get irked while people think about worries that they plainly do not know about. You managed to hit the nail upon the top and also defined out the whole thing without having side-effects , people could take a signal. Will likely be back to get more. Thanks
